Kids State Qualifiers

VAWA Kids Folkstyle State Qualifiers

 
 QUALIFIERS ARE FOR VIRGINIA RESIDENTS ONLY

 

Wrestlers will be required to qualify for the 2025 VAWA Boys Kids Folkstyle State Championships 

Qualifier events are open to all USA Wrestling members (VA Residents Only) in the 8U through 16U age divisions. No high school (9-12 grade) wrestlers are allowed to compete in the kids state qualifying series or VAWA Kid Folkstyle State Championships. Wrestlers must place in the Top 3 at Regional Qualifier or Win the Last Chance Qualifier to advance to the 2025 VAWA Boys Kids Folkstyle State Championships 

Once a wrestler has qualified for the VAWA Kids State Tournament, he/she is not permitted to participate in any other VAWA Kids Regional Qualifier. If an athlete is caught attempting to break this rule they will be disqualified from participating in the state tournament in any division.

*No High School Wrestlers (grades 9-12) allowed in qualifiers or kid state tournament. 

 

Boys Divisions (Max Wrestlers 450)

8U: Born 2017-2019 (Max Wrestlers - 60) : 
Weight Classes: 40 lbs, 43 lbs, 45 lbs, 49 lbs, 53 lbs, 56 lbs, 62 lbs, 70 lbs, 85 lbs, HWT (100 lbs)

10U: Born 2015-2016 (Max Wrestlers - 90):
Weight Classes: 49 lbs, 53 lbs, 56 lbs, 59 lbs, 63 lbs, 67 lbs, 71 lbs, 77 lbs, 84 lbs, 93 lbs, 105 lbs, 120 lbs, HWT (140 lbs)

12U: Born 2013-2014 (Max Wrestlers - 110):

Athletes must have at least a Limited Folkstyle Athlete USAW membership to compete in qualifiers.

  • Boys Division Kids State Tournament: UPDATE - Confirm and Pay On-Site After Qualifying! After qualifying for the State Tournament, you must confirm your intent to compete and pay the $60 state tournament advancement fee before leaving the qualifier. Failure to do so will result in your spot being offered to the next available alternate.  Be sure to complete this process on-site to secure your place at the State Tournament!  If a confirmed wrestler drops out between the qualifier and the state tournament VAWA will reach out to the next in line alternate from the same qualifier and offer the open spot.

$45 Paid Online (registration links at bottom of page).
Unpaid entries will be withdrawn daily. No walk in registrations.

 Online Registrations are Final: Online registrations are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Make sure you check your schedule prior to registering for one of the tournaments.

IMPORTANT TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

Tournament Rules

  • Only Virginia residents may compete, with residency validated by school enrollment.  Home schooled wrestlers must have a VA address on their USA Card membership.

  • BOYS DIVISIONS - WRESTLERS MAY GO UP AN AGE GROUP BUT NO DOUBLE BRACKETING.

  • Headgear is MANDATORY for all competitors.

  • Mouth guards are MANDATORY for wrestlers that have braces.

  • Rest time in-between matches is a minimum of 15 minutes.

State Tournament Advancement & Qualifying Rules:

  • Qualified wrestlers must maintain the same weight class for the state championships.

  • Once a wrestler has qualified for the VAWA Kids State Tournament, he/she is not permitted to attend or participate in any other VAWA Boys Kids Qualifier.

  • UPDATE - Wrestlers that QUALIFY for the State Tournament in the Boys Division must confirm and Pay On-Site After Qualifying! After qualifying for the State Tournament, you must confirm your intent to compete and pay the $60 state tournament advancement fee on-site before leaving the qualifier. Failure to do so will result in your spot being offered to the next available alternate.  Be sure to complete this process on-site to secure your place at the State Tournament!  If a confirmed wrestler drops out between the qualifier and the state tournament VAWA will reach out to the next in line alternate from the same qualifier and offer the open spot. Wrestler that drops out will not be eligible for a refund.

  • Only the top four placers in each weight class at qualifiers are eligible to compete at the State Tournament. In the event of a vacancy, alternates will be selected in the following order: first, the 4th-place finisher from the tournament where the spot became vacant; next, placers from the Last Chance Qualifiers in order of finish. Placers beyond 1st at Last Chance Qualifiers may also be used to fill state brackets if necessary.

  • It is the alternates responsibility to have up-to-date information on their USA Wrestling membership portal & Trackwrestling to be contacted if they are eligible due to a higher placer not attending the state tournament.  If an alternate does not respond within 24 hours of being notified at their email associated with their USA Wrestling membership the next in line will be invited.

  • Participants in an Age/Weight classes with 3 or fewer wrestlers will be advanced to VAWA Kids States (Regional Qualifier Only - Last Chance Qualifier Only Qualified Champion)---but MUST WEIGH IN and compete at the qualifier for which they registered.  Participants in an Age/Weight classes with only 1 wrestler must weigh in only and will advance to VAWA Kids States

  • No Automatic Qualifiers: All wrestlers must qualify through one of the designated qualifying tournaments. There are no exemptions based on performance in previous years.

  • Girls can only compete in one state tournament.  If a girl qualifies for the boys state and chooses to compete in the VAWA boys kids state division they cannot compete in the girls division.

  • Wrestlers that are injured during a finals match and are unable to continue may still qualify depending on their placement.

Weigh-ins

  • Wrestlers can only weigh in at their divisions designated weigh in time.  Please see the tournament schedule. 

  • No weight allowance at qualifiers – must weigh in wearing a singlet or 2-piece uniform. Wrestlers, please have a uniform on under clothes before entering the weigh-in area.

  • A 2 lb weight growth allowance will be given at the boys kids state tournament.  No allowance is given at qualifier. Wrestlers MUST make scratch weight at all qualifiers.  The growth allowance ONLY applies to the boys division at the state tournament.  Girls division will use Madision style bracketing so there is no weight allowance for the girls division.  

  • Must cut fingernails. An official NFHS Skin Form that a licensed physician has signed must be presented during weigh-ins for any skin issues. However, an on-site Doctor, Official, or Tournament Director may reject the skin form and disqualify the wrestler.

  • Link to Doctors Skin Infection Form if needed

  • Wrestlers will have until weigh-ins close to make weight on any scale being used.

  • All weigh-ins are on site only and only during your divisions designated weigh in time. Scratch weight at qualifiers. 

  • Registered wrestlers can change weight classes on site for a $30 fee, at qualifiers only (no weight changes at the boys kids state tournament)

Bracketing:

  • Brackets at the qualifiers will be seeded based off the following criteria.  It is the athletes responsibility to include seeding criteria when registering on Trackwrestling.  If an athlete does not include seeding criteria, they will not be seeded and changes will not be accepted after the registration deadline.  

 Separation/Seeding Information

Please find the separation criteria used for separating wrestlers in brackets at qualifiers, along with the priority level for each criteria (below criteria must be entered when registering wrestlers):

  • Multiple VAWA Folkstyle State Champion - Priority Level 1
  • Previous Year VAWA Folkstyle State Champion - Priority Level 2
  • Previous Year  VAWA Folkstyle State Runner Up - Priority Level 3
  • Previous Year  VAWA Folkstyle State 3rd Place - Priority Level 4
  • Previous Year  VAWA Folkstyle State 4th Place - Priority Level 5
  • Previous Year  VAWA Folkstyle State 5th Place - Priority Level 6
  • Previous Year  VAWA Folkstyle State 6th Place - Priority Level 7
  • Previous Year  VAWA Folkstyle State Did Not Place - Priority Level 8


Wrestlers must be registered and paid by 10:00 pm Saturday before tournament date to be considered for separation/seeding.  In the event a pre-seeded wrestler changes weights after the deadline he/she will no longer be seeded in the new weight class.

Special Considerations:

If a wrestler did not participate last year but has met one of the criteria in a previous year please send an email with details to interstate64wrestling@gmail.com or benzelryan@yahoo.com  no later than 10:00 pm Saturday before tournament date for special consideration.

Individual Medals: 1st-3rd Place for individuals 

ADMISSION

COACHES: FREE ***must present a 2024-25 USAW Coaches Card required for a floor pass to coach mat side.  

**COACHES REMINDER:  Online background checks are required every 2 years and a completed background check is required BEFORE you can purchase a current USAW Coach Card.  Background checks may take UP TO 2-4 WEEKS to process, so do NOT delay. No one is allowed in the coaching area without a current USAW Membership, coaching or volunteer. NO coaching on the mat without a Wrestling Leader Card.

Fans admission: $10.00, non-school age free.

COMPETITORS: The entry fee for all qualifiers is $45.00 and the deadline to register is 10:00 PM on the Saturday before the tournament - Walk-in Registrations WILL NOT be accepted.  Athletes must have a 2024-25 USAW Athlete Card available at Weigh-ins if requested. Proof of AGE may be required  on site if questioned.
