VAWA Statement Honoring Powhatan Youth Coach Mike Walter

The Virginia Wrestling Association would like to offer condolences to the family and friends of Virginia State Police Special Agent Michael Walter, a father of three, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on Friday, May 26, 2017. “Coach Mike” was instrumental in the development of many outstanding wrestling with the Powhatan Youth Wrestling team and Blackhawk Gym in Powhatan. Walter was an enthusiastic coach who touched many lives within the Powhatan and Virginia wrestling communities with his dedication to his athletes and love for the sport of wrestling. Not only did Walter teach wrestling skills, he helped prepare his charges for life off the mats. Coach Mike was incredible motivator and inspiration to his wrestlers, parents, and coaches of the Powhatan wrestling community. All of those associated with the Virginia Wrestling Association are deeply saddened by the passing of VSP Special Agent Michael Walter and our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Mike’s family, friends, and the Powhatan Wrestling community through this difficult time. 

There will be a visitation at Powhatan High School on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 10 AM-12 PM, followed by funeral services at 1 PM. If you would like to make a donation to support the family of Special Agent Walter, the Virginia State Police Association asks that you do it through them at the Virginia State Police Emergency Relief Fund website.  100 percent of the donation will go to his family.
