St. Christopher’s Assistant Coach and Virginia Wrestling Association Media Director Rob Prebish was recently selected by Maccabi USA to be an Assistant Coach for the USA team that will compete in the 20th World Maccabiah Games in Israel in July, 2017. The World Maccabiah Games is the third largest multi-sport event in the world behind the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games, bringing 9,000 Jewish athletes to Israel to compete in a multitude of sporting events. He will be joining head coach Chris Feder at the 20th World Maccabiah Games and will spend two weeks in Israel. Conceived by Joseph Yekutieli as a way to showcase Jewish athletic prowess since 1932, the World Maccabiah Games has grown into a truly global event, bringing the best Jewish athletes from around the world “home” to Israel to compete for Maccabiah glory.

“I am very excited to be returning to Israel after all of these years,” Prebish said. “I was extremely fortunate to compete in two Maccabiah Games as an athlete in 1989 and 1993, so to go back as a coach is incredible.”

Prebish, who was a Greco Roman coach for the USA team that competed in the 2014 UWW Cadet World Championships and has coached for VAWA at the Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo since 2001, won two golds in the Maccabiah Games in his competitive days. He was also a member of the Cadet and Junior World Greco Roman teams, winning silver at the Cadet Worlds. Prebish is in nineteenth year of coaching, spending the last eight seasons at St. Christopher’s in Richmond, helping the Saints win four VISAA State titles and a fifth place finish at National Preps in 2016.

“Part of my responsibility as one of the Maccabiah Games coaches is to help fund our team,” Prebish noted. “We have eight wrestlers and two coaches traveling to Israel at $8,000 per person, so we have our work cut out for ourselves. Coach Feder and I want to ensure our team is fully funded, so we need the wrestling community’s help in raising this money.”

The US Maccabiah Games team trials will be help in April, 2017. Interested Jewish athletes can sign up for the trials on the Maccabi USA website .

“We want to bring our best Jewish wrestlers to Israel for the Maccabiah Games,” Prebish continued. “This is going to be an exciting opportunity for all Jewish wrestlers, so you definitely want to sign up and try out.”
