The VAWA freestyler matched the medals won by the Greco team in Fargo, led by Junior runner-up John Borst (Sherando) at 195 lbs. and Malcom Robinson (Blair Academy), who placed third at Cadet 126 lbs. closing out a successful week at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals. A total of 14 Virginia wrestlers placed in the top eight of their weight class, earning All-American status. And for the second year in a row, the Virginia team won the coveted Spirit Award, showcased by their loud cheering for all three of the finalists from the Commonwealth.

Robinson, a rising junior at Blair Academy, got things started for VAWA in freestyle, coming back from a contentious fourth round loss to eventual runner-up Jaden Abas (California). But the future Buccaneer grappler won six consecutive matches to earn the bronze medal at 126. He defeated 2016 National Preps champion (and teammate) Chris Cannon of New Jersey 5-2 in the third place match.

River Curtis (Battlefield), a Cadet Greco All-American, finished two rounds away from reaching All-American status at 132 lbs. finishing with a record of 3-2.  Riley Parker (106 lbs., First Colonial), Connor Alexander (120 lbs., St. Christopher's), Luke Grubbs (126 lbs., York), Nicholas Scolarici (132 lbs., Freedom- South Riding), and Trent Ragland (195 lbs., New Kent) all matched Curtis's 3-2 record in the Cadet Division.

Sherando's John Borst led the way for the Junior wrestlers, by reaching the 195 lb. championship match, but dropped a 10-0 tech fall to Ohio's Benjamin Darmstadt. He posted a 6-1 record in freestyle to earn his first All-American plaque in Fargo. Hunter Bolen (Christiansburg), a 2014 Cadet Greco All-American, returned to the Fargo podium at 160 lbs., ending up in fourth place with a 7-2 record. And 220 lb. Greco runner-up Jeffrey Allen (Amherst) was the only male wrestler on the team to medal in both styles. He finished 7th in freestyle.

Two Virginia wrestlers reached the dreaded round of 12, otherwise known as the "blood round". Winners of matches in the infamous round earn All-American status. Brentsville's rising senior Killian Cardinale (120 lbs.), a 2015 Junior National All-American, New Kent's Caden Darber (132 lbs.), while Christiansburg's Marshall Keller and Stanley Smeltzer of Smithfield bowed out of the tournament one round before the blood round at 132 and 170 lbs. respectively.
