Culpeper's Kirby Wins 2nd Cadet Title

Team Virginia began the 2016 USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National wrestling tournaments on solid footing, earning ten medals in the Women’s and Greco Roman divisions in Fargo, ND. Three wrestlers reached the championship finals of their weight class, capped off by Culpeper’s Jesse Kirby successfully defending her 2015 Cadet National title.

Cadet Women

Kirby led the way for the Cadet Women’s team, pinning California’s Corey Burton in 2:17 in the 198 lbs. final. It was not easy for Kirby, as she gave up a four-point headlock early on in the match before storming back for the fall. Kirby’s high school teammate Brianna Csontos posted a 6-1 record and finished third at 124 lbs. while Meadowbrook High School wrestler Jasmine Weaver took sixth at 108 lbs. Statesville, NC wrestler Kaitlyn Dishman reached the round of 12 at 143 lbs., missing the podium by one match.

Cadet Greco

Trent Ragland became New Kent HS’s first ever USA Wrestling All-American by finishing third at 195 lbs. After dropping his first match, Ragland reeled off seven consecutive wins to earn the bronze medal. He defeated Iowa’s Hunter DeJong 6-1 in the third place bout. After missing weight for 220 lbs. Amherst’s Wade Wheeler moved up to 285 and nearly repeated Ragland’s feat finishing in fourth place. He dropped a 5-1 decision to Michigan’s Austin Emerson 5-1. River Curtis (Battlefield HS), personified the Greco Warrior mentality of the Virginia delegation, never giving up in the face of adversity after being down in a number of his matches and finished in seventh place at 132 lbs.  He finished the Greco tournament with a 7-2 record and a fall in 2:49 over South Carolina wrestler Trevor Mansfield.

Junior Women

Jasmine Weaver picked right up where she left off after the Cadet tournament winning three out of four matches at 105 lbs. for a runner-up finish. Sierra Powell (Independence High School, WV) won six out of eight matches to finish in seventh place at 121 lbs. She pinned Sierra Joner (Washington) in the seventh place match. And Jesse Kirby finished third at 198 lbs. to earn her second medal of the week and fourth Fargo medal overall. She pinned her Cadet finals opponent Corey Burton (California) in the third place match.

Junior Greco Roman

Jeffrey Allen made it two medals for Amherst High School by finishing in second place at 220 lbs. The rising senior won five matches using a very consistent and patient style to grind out matches before running into Sam Shields-Colbray from Oregon in the championship finals. Allen put up a valiant fight against Shields-Colbray, nearly tossing the Oregon grappler for four points twice but came up short in his quest to win Fargo. Sherando’s John Borst reached the round of twelve at 195 before bowing out of the tournament. Oscar Smith’s Trevon Majette (120), Grayson County’s Will Lawrence (145), and Broad Run’s Michael Batista (170) all went deep into the tournament, nearly reaching the round of 12.
