VAWA Finishes 2nd and 3rd at East Coast Duals

Bolen and Mukai Go Undefeated in Both Styles

Hunter Bolen (160 lbs.) and Thomas Mukai (285 lbs.) led Team Virginia to a second place finish in Greco and a third place in freestyle at the 2016 East Coast Duals at Northeast High School in Pasadena, MD June 11-12. Bolen and Mukai ended the weekend undefeated in both styles, leading Virginia to their outstanding finishes.

Greco Roman

Virginia posted a 3-1 record en route to a second place finish in Greco. The team defeated Maryland Orange 54-15, Maryland Red 52-19, and North Carolina 55-16 before dropping the championship dual to Maryland 35-34. Brandon Crowder (100), Aaron Howell (106), Marshall Keller (132), Robert Garnett (138) Will Lawrence (145), Nick Giantonio (152), Hunter Bolen (160), Stanley Smeltzer (170), and Thomas Mukai (285) all posted perfect 4-0 records for Team Virginia in Greco.

Freestyle

Virginia's Red team finished 3rd in freestyle, putting together an overall record of 4-1. They defeated Pennsylvania 49-20, Maryland Red 41-28, and Maryland Orange 55-11, but lost to Connecticut 46-22 to finish second in their pool. VA Red bounced back for third place with a solid 38-27 win over Maryland Black. Hunter Bolen (160) and Thomas Mukai finished with 5-0 records in freestyle.

Despite not having a full line up, Virginia Blue finished 7th in freestyle with a 2-3 record, defeating Delaware 30-19 in pool competition and Maryland Red 27-26 in the 7th place dual.
