GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Devin Carter has been named the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Carter, a psychology major from Christiansburg, Va., is a three-time All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team honoree.

The 141-pounder was named the Most Valuable Wrestler at this ACC Wrestling Championship and led Virginia Tech to the team title after coming back from a severe hamstring injury that required mid-season surgery and forced him to miss two months of competition.

Seeded fourth nationally in the NCAA Championships, Carter reached the finals of the NCAAs before losing to the top seed in the Tournament and finished second nationally. The loss in the NCAA title match was his only defeat of the year, as he posted an 18-1 record.

A total of six members of this year’s All-ACC Academic Wrestling have been named to the team multiple times, led by Virginia senior Jon Fausey, who is a four-time All-ACC Academic honoree. Joining Carter as three-time team members are Frank Abbondanza and Alex Utley of North Carolina and Virginia Tech’s Chris Moon. Maryland’s Danny Orem was chosen for the second time.

Four members of the All-ACC Academic team also earned All-Americas honors and were ACC champions in Carter, Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock (184), Virginia’s Nick Sulzer (165) and Pitt’s Tyler Wilps (174).

Five members of the All-ACC Academic wrestling squad were also named All-ACC in Carter, Sheptock, Sulzer, Wilps and Pitt’s Max Thomusseit (184).

Duke and North Carolina led all schools with five student-athletes each on the 2014 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team. Pitt and Maryland each had three honorees, while NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech had two apiece.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
