VAWA - A Look Ahead

Highlights from the September and October Meetings

VAWA would like to welcome Tim Pierson to the Executive Committee as the VP of Officials; we would also like to welcome the following new directors: Gary Davis-Fundraising Director, Corey Beckner-Membership Director, Nick White-Grappling Director, Kurt McHenry-Cultural Exchange Director, and Frank Lipoli-Beach Director. The following were re-elected to their current positions: Jack Harcourt-Vice Chairman, Steve Crocker-VP of Finance, Glenn Zoski-Secretary of Operations, Ross Gitomer-Cadet Director, and Sonny Close-Junior Director.

VAWA National Teams for 2014…we will be sending teams to the following events: March 16 Mason Dixon Challenge at Hayfield High School this event will take the place of last year’s Virginia vs. Maryland Challenge with four states participating this year (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia). April 10-12 will be the NWCA/USA Wrestling Scholastic Showcase in Crawfordsville, IN. The Junior age group will be going to the East Coast Junior Duals on June 7-8 in Maryland and the Junior National Duals in Oklahoma City from June 24-28. We will be taking the Schoolboy’s to the National Duals on June 4-8 in Indianapolis. The Cadets will participate in the Cadet National Duals from June 10-14 in Daytona Beach. We will also be taking a team to the Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND from July 19-26. Please be sure to check VirginiaWrestling.com because there is a chance we will sponsor even more teams. Applications for the Schoolboy, Cadet and Junior National Dual Teams will also be posted on the website under the Team VA tab.

VAWA Events…VAWA will be sanctioning many local events in 2013-2014 as of today we have 25 local events plus these following marquee events in Virginia: VAC Holiday Duals, VAWA Elementary Club Duals, VAWA Kids Folkstyle State Championships on March 1, VAC Freshmen/Sophomore/Junior States, VAC All Virginia High School Super States, VAWA Future Champions Tournament, Mason-Dixon Challenge, VAWA Freestyle Club Duals, VAWA Kids/Cadet/Junior FS & GR State Championships on May 17-18.

VAWA will be offering parents and athletes a chance to help offset the costs of participating on a National Dual Team or to compete in the Cadet and Junior National Championships through our new National Team Compensation Program (NTCP). More information on this program is provided below.

To help support our efforts to continually improve our customer service and programs VAWA will be hiring head freestyle and Greco-Roman coaches. We would like to have our coaches in place by December 1. In addition to the coaching positions we will be adding a full time Executive Director.
