Bandits Dominate the Maryland Virginia Leagues Championship

The Bandits (Coached by Sam Smith) easily captured their 3rd consecutive Maryland/Virginia Leagues meet title last weekend. The Bandits compete in the Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL), and the CAWL is one of three similar leagues that feed in to the Maryland Virginia Leagues meet. The Bandits dominated the field winning 8 of 19 weight classes. The Bandits ran the table in the middle weights winning, 75 (Zak DePasquale), 80 (Dallas Smith 2nd title), 85 (Alfred Banister), 90 (Jake Smith 3rd title), 95 (Brooks Martino), 101 (Jacob Crawford 2nd title) , and 115 (Jonathan Simmons). The Bandits also added an upper weight title at 150 (David Reck beat the defending champion). In addition, another Virginian ,Gary Woods of the Stafford Highlanders, captured his second individual title at 122.
The Bandits led the CAWL in outperforming both Anne Arundel Wrestling League (AAWL) , and Maryland Junior Wrestling League (MJWL). The CAWL captured over 41% of individual medals, and the CAWL accounted for over half the finalists, and well over a third of the higher value medals(1st-3rd). CAWL completely dominated three weight classes capturing four of six medals at 85, 90, and 95 pounds respectively. In addition, at both 85 and 95 pounds, CAWL wrestlers took 1st , 2nd, 3rd, and 5th.

Over 47 teams participate in one of the three league. The NOVA MatDogs (coached by Derek Doahue) were the other Virginia CAWL team that placed in the top 10. The MatDogs placed seven wrestlers in the top six and had two finalists, Ryan Forrest at 115, and Beau Donahue at 122. Bandits Dominate the Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL)

The future of Northern Virginia wrestling is bright. For the fourth year in a row, the Bandits (who practice at Robinson and Hayfield and are coached by Sam Smith) won both the 2008 Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL) dual meet and tournament championships. The NOVA MatDogs (who practice at Westfields and are coached by Derek Donahue) finished second in the dual meet championship and third in the tournament championship.

The Bandits were very strong in the middle weights, capturing individual titles in six consecutive weight classes from 75 to 101, and another individual title at 150. Jake Smith led the Bandits efforts in capturing his 5th consecutive individual title, pinning each of his four opponents in the first period. Jacob Crawford and Gary Woods both captured their 2nd consecutive individual titles in dominating their respective weights. Jay Ives (NOVA MatDogs and future Langley wrestler) earned the Outstanding Wrestler Award by blowing through the130 pound weight class with five dominant wins (1 technical fall followed by four pins).
NOVA teams captured 11 of the 19 individual titles. The Bandits captured 7 individual titles, Stafford 2 titles, NOVA MatDogs 1, and Culpeper 1.

This weekend, the top 6 CAWL place winner in each weight will compete in the MD/VA Championships. The CAWL wrestlers will compete against wrestlers from both the Maryland Junior League (MJWL), and the Anne Arundel Wrestling League AAWL. The Bandits have won this championship over the past few years as well. Please wish our young men luck this weekend as they compete against many of the best young wrestlers in MD this coming weekend.
Bees Club Wrestling Tournament
December, 2007
On Saturday December 15, 2007 the Bees Wrestling club held their 24th annual wrestling tournament at Brookville High School located in Campbell County Virginia. The K-12 tournament hosted a large number of wrestlers even with the threat of bad weather. Most of the local clubs, the Hilltoppers (E.C. Glass), Quick pin (Amherst), (Jefferson Forest), Bees Club (Brookville) our host, Smith Mountain Lake club (Staunton River), Franklin County and Linkhorne as well as clubs from as far as Richmond Va. and Greensboro North Carolina were in attendance. The competition was very stiff and the clubs in attendance represented themselves well.
The Hilltoppers were represented by 21 youth wrestlers. Of the 21 that participated 5 placed first 8 placed second and 8 placed third. The Hilltoppers wrestlers did very well at the higher level of competition provided by this tournament. The coaching staff for the Hilltoppers wrestlers was pleased with the wrestlers progress to date and their display of good sportsmanship.
Several other clubs were asked about their programs and indicted that they were very pleased with their progress to date. It was obvious during the tournament that all of the clubs have worked extremely hard this year.
The areas next tournament The 24th Annual E.C. Glass Winter Classic will be held at E.C. Glass High School on January 12, 2008 in Lynchburg Virginia. This is typically a very large tournament and has drawn over 600 wrestlers in the past. The competition will be fierce as schools and clubs from Virginia and surrounding States plan to be in attendance. Please note if you have attended this tournament in the past that there will be no Senior division this year due to the growing numbers of youth. Hilltopers Wrestling Club
December 2007
Well December is here and the Hilltoppers Wrestling Club just participated in its first tournament of the season Saturday Dec. 1, 2007 at Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Virginia. The tournament was sponsored by the Central Virginia Youth Wrestling Organization. The Hilltoppers (E.C. Glass) were in attendance as well as the Forest Club (Jefferson Forest), Bees Club (Brookville), Smith Mountain Lake club (Staunton River), Franklin County, Linkhorne and several other independent clubs. The coaching staff was very pleased with the way the Hilltoppers preformed. Each wrestler gave 100% on the mat and win or lose displayed good sportsmanship.
Of the 22 Hilltoppers that participated 7 wrestlers placed first 5 wrestlers placed second and 10 wrestlers placed third. All of the youth wrestlers at the tournament looked good and it was obvious that their coaches have worked very hard with them. They and their coaches are to be commended for their sportsmanship and participation.
Youth wrestling in the Lynchburg area looks to be very competitive this year. There are several youth tournaments scheduled for Lynchburg and the surrounding area. .
