Sunday, July 15, 6am
At 6 am, team leader Rick Jones is making his rounds, knocking on the doors and awakening the Cadet Greco-Roman wrestlers for the 7 am weigh in. Most of the boys were already awake, after a fitful night awakening every few hours to check their weight on the scale in the common shower/restroom. A quick meeting in the only airconditioned room in the dorm (the TV lounge) and they are off on a quick 5 minute walk to the huge Fargo Dome for weigh ins.
Sunday, July 15, 7:45 am
Everyone has made weight for the Cadet Greco, the wrestlers have little less than 2 hours to get off the scale, down to the cafeteria for breakfast, and then back to the dome for warm ups prior to the first round which is scheduled to start at 9am. This year, USA Wrestling will provide live steaming to 18 of the 23 mats throughout the entire event. Go to http://www.themat.tv/2012/07/2012-cadet-junior-nationals-mat-1/
and follow the prompts to watch live action!
Sunday, July 15 9:44 am
The huge screen in the corner of the Fargo Dome showed that the first VA wrestler of the 2012 Cadet Greco Nationals would be rising junior, Matt Allan of Alexandria (Hayfield HS). On mat 15 Matt started things off with a bang by pinning his opponent from Minnesota. The first VA wrestler to get called up to mat 1 on the raised platform was heavyweight Cordell Soileau. Soileau defeated a tough opponent from Minnesota 1-0, 0-1, 2-0. The match came down to a parre tarre clinch in the third period. A good start for VA!

Sunday, July 15 2:50 pm
The second round of Cadet Greco competition begins. Several VA wrestlers escaped the first round undefeated: Joey Prada is 2-0 at 94 lbs. Also 2-0 is JD Gregory at 106 lbs. Coy Ozias fought off his back in the first period of his 3rd bought, and stormed back to victory against a tough competitior from Michigan to finish the first round 3-0. Brian Laprade is 2-0 at 132. Dylan Wisman is 3-0, wrestling basically on one leg with a pre existing injury, he is really tough!
Sunday, July 15 5:01 pm
The intensity of the bouts has picked up a pace. The number of VA members still alive has dropped from 18 at the start of the day to 6 late into round #2. Dylan Wisman currently stands at 5-0, Michael Bryant lost his first bout of the day but since has reeled of 3 wins in a row. Hunter Starner stands at 4-1, and Coy Ozias is still undefeated at 5-0. Joey Prata appears to be in good position to medal, as he is 4-0 in his pool and now has a bye. JD Gregory’s only loss is to top seed Kyle Norstrem of FLA, so his record stands at 3-1. We have 2 more hours to survive the day!

160 pound cadet Patrick Jessen attacks his opponent with a high dive in early action at the cadet greco nationals
Monday, July 16, 6:49 am
The Juniors are being staged for 7 am weigh in. The VAWA coaching staff is wondering how they will make it through 3 more tournaments this week! In last evenings Cadet Greco action, 5 Virginians made it through the fire of the first day and are poised to become All Americans: At 94 lbs Joey Prada is down to the last 4 in his pool and is assured of All-American status. With the following wins yesterday evening;
Match #4 Joey Prata (Virginia) over Grant Sorensen (Oklahoma) Dec 6-0,4-0
Match #5 Joey Prata (Virginia) over Tanner Cox (Utah) Dec 4-0,2-0
Match #6 Joey Prata (Virginia) received a bye.
Prada is in the Pool round robin, should he win his 2 matches this morning he would compete for the gold this evening.
At 113 lbs, Coy Ozias won his last bout of Sunday’s session to finish the day 6-0. Currently there are 6 wrestlers alive in his pool, 4 of those wrestlers have a loss. So Ozias is in good standing to medal. His last evenings results were as follows:
Match #4 Coy Ozias (Virginia) over Chase Clasen (Washington) Dec 7-0,5-0
Match #5 Coy Ozias (Virginia) over Dan Kelly (Iowa) Dec 1-0,2-0
Match #6 Coy Ozias (Virginia) over Colton Ullman (Ohio) Dec 3-0,1-0
The silent assassin, Hunter Starner has made a strong run at 126 lbs. After a tough second round loss, Hunter has reeled off 4 consecutive wins to round out his record at 5-1:
Match #4 Hunter Starner (Virginia) over Josh Bird (Wisconsin) Dec 2-0,2-0
Match #5 Hunter Starner (Virginia) over Riley Beard (Illinois) Fall 0-2,1:11
Match #6 Hunter Starner (Virginia) over Patricio Lugo (Florida) Dec 2-0,0-1,6-0
Currently there are 4 wrestlers left in his 126 A pool, after the smoke clears from this mornings cadet session, we will know which All-American spot Hunter will be wrestling for! Congrats and well deserved for a hard working young man.
Taking a cue from Hunter’s rally yesterday, Micheal Bryant has also made a strong rally. After losing his first round bout at 145 lbs, Bryant has reeled off 5 straight wins to put him in position to become VA’s 4th Cadet Greco All-American!
Match #4 Michael Bryant (Virginia) over Casey Sparkman (Ohio) Dec 2-1,2-1
Match #5 Michael Bryant (Virginia) over Izaec Quintanilla (Washington) Dec 4-0,5-0
Match #6 Michael Bryant (Virginia) over Chase Straw (Iowa) Dec 0-2,2-0,6-1
His pool is also down to the final 4, and since only his initial opponent stands undefeated, Bryant has a shot to make the finals if someone can beat Dustin Williams of Kansas this morning. Another well deserved accolade, as I have seen him all over the state honing his craft these past 2 years.
170 pound Dylan Wisman has really shown an incredible amount of moxy. He tore his meniscus in his left knee earlier this summer, but with his doctors OK, he is competing essentially on one leg. Dylan is currently 5-1 and has assured himself an All-American medal, as his pool is also down to 4 (top 8 placers attain All-American status in Fargo). Congrats and continued success!
Match #4 Dylan Wisman (Virginia) over Casey Beaver (Iowa) Fall 6-4,1:08
Match #5 Dylan Wisman (Virginia) over Jared Langley (Kansas) Dec 1-0,4-2
Match #6 Angus Arthur (Michigan) over Dylan Wisman (Virginia) Dec 1-0,0-1,5-2
In a more somber note, sophomore heavyweight, Cordell Soileau spent the night in the hospital after breaking his arm during his 3 round bout. The athletic trainers and hospital staff were stunned at the results of the x-ray, especially how Soileau handled the pain of this injury. In a few months he will be back competing again.

Cordell Soileau’s Fargo experience ends with this injury. An unfortunate reality of sports is that injuries occur, however each setback is an opportunity for a comeback!
USA Wrestling is posting some matches on their Youtube channel. Here are some of Virginia cadets.

The scene is surreal, cadet wrestlers battling for All-American status on 4 mats, and junior wrestlers making their start into the Junior National event on 19 other mats. Coy Ozias continues to impress with another super intense effort in his first match of the morning, a victory over Maleek Williams of Florida. Prada, Starner, and Bryant all lost close matches and will wrestle another this morning to determine their medal placement matches later this evening.
Monday, July 16, 10:38 am
Prada will be wrestling for the bronze medal later today. Starner will be wrestling for 7th place and Bryant will be wrestling for 5th place. Dylan Wisman will be wrestling for 7th place at 170 C GR.

COY OZIAS to the Cadet Greco Finals at 113 lbs!
In a thrilling match, Coy and his opponent from Nebraska had a 3 period Pool final. Coy won on a Parre Tarre gut wrench in the 3rd period to pave his way to the finals!

Idaho’s Drake Foster looks dejected as Coy Ozias claims the 113 pound Cadet Greco-Roman Championships. Interestingly, Coy never wrestled a Greco match until earlier this summer!
Monday, July 16 5:46 pm
Coy Ozias, 113 lb 2012 Cadet Greco-Roman National Champion:
In an exciting match, Coy pulls out the championship in 3 periods. At 94 lbs Joey Prada placed 4th, 126 pounder Hunter Starner captured 7th place, Michael Bryant took 6th at 145 lbs, and Dylan Wisman placed 8th at cadet 170 lbs. 5 All Americans, with 1 National Champion. Not a bad haul for the VAWA Cadet National Team.
If you look closely at the 145 pound awards photo, you will see a familiar face atop the awards platform. Former VAWA Schoolboy champion Mason Manville, who now hails from Minnesota, won the Greco Roman Championship!
Monday, July 16 10:24 pm
The first day of Junior Greco is in the books. Heavyweight Andrew Lutterloh and 113 pounder Ibrahim Banduka fell one round short of placing. Two lone Virginians have survived til the next day. Gunston WC team members, 138 lb rising senior, Brock Jacobson and 138 lb graduated senior Sahid Kargbo will carry the VA flag tomorrow. Brock is 4-1 with a bye, and has 5 wrestlers left in his side of the pool. He needs a win tomorrow morning to assure himself all-american status. Sahid is 5-1 and with only 4 remaining in his side of the bracket, he has garnered an All-American placement.
Cadet All-American Hunter Starner finally had to give in and let esteemed VAWA athletic trainer Ed Metzger drain his cauliflower ear. It will alleviate some of the discomfort leading into the cadet freestyle competition which begins Thursday.

Ed Metzger’s “ear plaster” will help keep the fluid from refilling the ear. Plus all the girls love it!
Tuesday, July 17 9:03 am
Day 2 of the Men’s Junior Greco-Roman Championships are starting. Two Virginians remain alive at this point. 138 pounder Brock Jacobson, a rising senior at Edison HS must win his first bout today against long time nemesis (from the CAWL) Daniel Sanchez of Maryland, in order to attain All-American status. The other survivor, Sahid Kargbo, a 138 pound graduate of Hayfield HS, has already made All-American, but will wrestle the undefeated Colt Cotten of Pennsylvania this morning to determine what place he will compete for later this evening.

Team leader Rick Jones mentioned during a brief down period that he didn’t understand why he felt so tired. I think it has to do with this schedule:
5:30 am wake up, shower
6:00 am knock on doors and wake up all the cadets for weigh in
6:30 am pass out weigh in cards at the Dome
7:00 am grab a breakfast
8:00 am Team leaders meeting
8:30 am drive coaches and trainer from dorm to dome
9:30 am Cadet FS starts
1:30 pm grab a lunch
3:00 pm get coaches and team back to dome
3:30 pm Cadet FS restarts
7:00 pm Cadet FS ends
7:30 pm National coaches counsel meeting
9:00 pm Team meeting in tv lounge
9:30 pm coaches meeting in tv lounge
10:00 pm Bed checks
11:00pm get to bed and do it all over again tomorrow (same schedule with little variation Sun-Fri)
You Gotta love it!

The 3 survivors going into tomorrow’s 1:30 pm Cadet Freestyle session are:
1. Joey Prada with a 3-1 record. Prada has 5 alive in his pool and must defeat Joseph Grass of WV tomorrow. Prada beat Grass 1-1, 4-3 in GR earlier this week.
2. JD Gregory has a first round by tomorrow after going 4-1 on the day. He has 9 left in his pool, and 4 of them have a loss. After the bye, chances are his pool would be down to 5 or 6 wrestlers, meaning he will then need at least one more victory to make A.A.
3. Coy Ozias is 5-0 on the day and will have a first round bye tomorrow afternoon. His pool has 9 wrestlers left in it. 5 of those wrestlers have a loss, with 2 of the first round match ups pairing up 1 loss wrestlers. So chances are his pool with be down to 7 wrestlers bye the time Coy takes the mat, meaning he will have to wrestle several more times before his pool shakes itself out.

At this point of the tourney, we are getting down to the bare bones. On the cadet side, VA has 2 wrestlers alive in the 3rd day of the event: 94 pounder Joey Prada has already secured all-american status. With a first round win he will place 2nd in his pool and would wrestle for 3rd place later this afternoon. On the junior side of the ledger, VA has 5 competing into the second day of their tourney. Tommy Aloi at 106 lbs has 1 loss and needs 2 more victories to get to the pool round robin. At 113 Ibrahim Banduka has 1 loss and is in the same predicament. At 138 Sahid Kargbo upset 4 x NY state champion Quinton Murphy of NY in the 4th round last night, then lost a 3 period affair to a Blair wrestler and now sits at 4-1. With 10 alive in his bracket it will probably take 2 more wins to get in the medal rounds. At 170 Zach Epperly has been truly dominant and is undefeated and 2 or 3 wins would put him in contention for the finals. After missing weight at 220, Andrew Lutterloh has put himself in contention at heavyweight with a 2-1 record. Again 2 more wins would give him good position to medal. They have cut down the number of mats from 23 to 11 as the field has been cut 2/3rds.

The action is fast and furious. Tommy Aloi pinned his first opponent of the day, however Joey Prada and Coy Ozias ran into guys too tough and determined. Prada will wrestle this afternoon for 5th place at 94 pounds after a 1-0, 2-2 loss. Coy still has several more matches to win. His loss by shutout is a big set back, we will see how he rebounds.

Whew! We are down to one Junior VA wrestler, Zach Epperly has a match against an Iowa kid next. Wow! that kid was huge, but as is typical for Zach, he found a way to get it done and used his Dresser dump at the end of the period to win. His pool is down to 6, he’ll need at least one more victory to place.
Some former Virginians are doing very well in the FS tourney. Cadet 145 Mason Manville, wrestling with Minnesota, is undefeated and has won his pool and is again the the finals. Junior Jack Bass, wrestling for Texas is also undefeated. Jack Bass is undefeated at Junior 145 lbs and is now in the pool A round robin. Depending how he does, Jack can make the finals or finish no lower than 6th place.

Zach Epperly once again used his Dresser Dump to perfection, this time it resulted in a pin in under 15 seconds. So he is in the Pool round robin, which means he is an All-American! Congrats. Once again coach Webber has produced more AA’s.
