Virginia native Kurt McHenry dominated the filed at the 2017 UWW Cadet World Championships in Athens, Greece to win his second straight World title at 46 kg (101 lbs) in freestyle. He defeated 2016 UWW World Champion Giorgi Gegelashvili 12-4 in the gold medal match, running out to an 8-0 lead before Gegelashvili closed the gap to 8-4 in the second period. McHenry scored a four point move at the buzzer to win the match and the championship.

McHenry, who wrestles for St. Paul's School for Boys in Maryland, posted a 5-0 record at the tournament, including tech falls in his first two matches: 10-0 over Fortis Papadopoulis (Canada) and 18-8 over Taiyrbek Zhumashbek Uulu (Kyrgyzstan). The rising junior defeated Turkey’s Adem Uzun 4-2 in the quarterfinals and Russia’s Magomed Abdurakmanov 5-4 in the semis before taking out Gegelashvili in the championship bout. The Leesburg native won gold at 42 kg in the 2016 UWW Cadet World Championships.
