College bound HS seniors are encouraged to apply

Richmond, VA - The Virginia Wrestling Association (VAWA) and the Community Foundation serving Richmond and Central Virginia are pleased to announce that the Dick Glover Virginia Wrestling Scholarship Fund has been approved and applications are now being accepted.  The first recipients will be high school students that are graduating this spring and heading to a college or university in the fall.

The purpose of the Glover Scholarship is to award a deserving college bound student who has been successful and active contributors in the classroom, their local communities and an active member of the Virginia wrestling community.  An NCAA study conducted in 2013 showed that NCAA wrestling produces more first generation college students than any other NCAA sport.  The Virginia Wrestling Association felt compelled to help deserving Virginians earn their undergraduate degree.  VAWA is believed to be the first USA Wrestling state association to establish a merit based college scholarship.  This scholarship is for any high school wrestler who is going on to college.

Last year the Foundation awarded over $380,000 to students across the Commonwealth.  We hope your students will take advantage of this and other scholarship opportunities made possible by the Community Foundation.

Description

The Dick Glover Virginia Wrestling Scholarship Fund was established in 2015 for the purpose of supporting academic and athletic pursuits of young wrestlers.  This will be done through post-secondary educational scholarships for qualifying graduates of public or private high Schools in Virginia, attending an accredited 2-year or 4-year community college, college or university in the United States.

A teacher, coach, and mentor, Dick Glover dedicated his life to mentoring student athletes as a high school wrestling coach at the Woodberry Forest School and the Blue Ridge School.  Coach Glover is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Virginia Chapter) and founder of the Virginia Independent School Wrestling Association.  His teams won 25 league championships, 13 state championships, and a National Prep Championship.

What are Community Foundations

Community foundations are tax-exempt public charities serving thousands of people who share a common interest—improving the quality of life in their area.

Individuals, families, businesses, and organizations create permanent charitable funds that help their region meet the challenges of changing times. The foundation invests and administers these funds.

All community foundations are overseen by a volunteer board of leading citizens and run by professionals with expertise in identifying their communities’ needs.

In the United States, community foundations serve tens of thousands of donors, administer more than $31 billion in charitable funds, and address the core concerns of nearly 700 communities and regions.

The Community Foundation is pleased to announce 2016 scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors, recent high school graduates and adult learners.  We have approximately 60 different scholarship funds available.  Eligibility criteria (which is unique to each scholarship) and application information can be accessed on the Foundation’s website: http://www.tcfrichmond.org/receive/apply-for-a-scholarship/.
