It looked like it was going to be a repeat of Monday’s 130lb Cadet Greco-roman finals, as Zane Richards seemed destined to once again clash with Virginia super frosh, Brandon Jeske for the 130 lb Cadet Freestyle gold medal. However, Richards was upset by Dakota Trom of Minnesota. 84 pounder Hunter Wright will battle for 7th place and attain All-american status against Carlos Fuentez of Illinois. Richmond native Marcus Beckwith will battle for 5th place in the 215 pound weight class. These Cadet Medal matches will occur Friday afternoon.
In the Junior Freestyle nationals, there are 4 wrestlers advancing to the second day of competition. 3 Virginians finished the second session of day 1 undefeated and will be agonizingly close to reaching that coveted All-american status. 112 pounder Jake Smith is 3 and 0 with a bye, with 10 left in his pool; 4 of whom are undefeated. At 119 pounds, Caleb Richardson is 5-0. He also has 10 left in his bracket with 4 undefeated. 145 pounder Duke Pickett is undefeated at 5 and 0, with 10 remaining in his pool, 5 of whom are undefeated. Also at 145 pounds, Josh Clark is 4-1 and will need several more wins tomorrow morning to advance to the all-american rounds, as he also has 10 remaining in his pool with 5 undefeated.
