Wrestling Rules Changes Announced for 2008-09
May 2,, 2008


INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee emphasized risk minimization and standardized procedures to assist both coaches and referees through 16 wrestling rules changes for the 2008-09 school year.

Rules changes were made by the committee at its April 5-7 meeting in Indianapolis and subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. To view a summary of all the changes click here.

Three Mason Wrestlers Named to the CAA All-Rookie Team
Bucher, Byers and McLaughlin all earn conference All-Rookie honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (April 8, 2008) The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) announced today its awards for the 2007-08 wrestling season, including the Coach of the Year, Wrestler of the Year, Rookie of the Year and the All-Rookie Team. George Mason’s strong rookie class, which helped the team make the jump from eighth place to a fourth-place finish at the CAA Championships, was recognized with three members making the CAA All-Rookie team. The three All-Rookie selections – Brandon Bucher (149), Frankie McLaughlin (157) and Cayle Byers (197) – were the most of any team in the conference. Read More...


ODU Coach Steve Martin Named CAA Coach of the Year
RS FR James Nicholson Named CAA Rookie of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. - Old Dominion University wrestling coach Steve Martin has been selected the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year and red shirt freshman James Nicholson has been honored as the CAA Rookie of the year today as the CAA announced its 2007-08 wrestling awards.

Martin was named CAA Coach of the Year for the first time in his four years at ODU, after guiding the Monarchs to the highest national ranking in school history. Nicholson (Des Moines, Iowa) became Old Dominion's first All-American since 1995, winning his first CAA championship and finishing 8th at the NCAA Tournament. Read More...


Bubba Jenkins, NCAA Runner-Up
The Virginia Beach Native takes 2nd in NCAA's
March 23th, 2008,


Congratulations to Virginia Native Bubba Jenkins for his runner-up finish in the NCAA National Championships at 149 lbs. Bubba lost to Iowa's Brent Metcalf in the finals 14-8.

VA Wins Senior All Star Classic 38-24

Congratulations to the Virginia Senior All-Star Team for winning the battle of the beltway as they down Maryland 38-24. The dual was wrestled March 14th at Langley High School.  To see match results click here


Christiansburg, Manassas Park Win State Titles
March 13th, 2008

Congratulations to Christiansburg for winning their 7th AA state title. Grundy finished second, while Poquoson, Millbrook and William Byrd finished out the top 5. On the A side, Manassas Park won another title with Glenvar, Strasburg, Lancaster and Mathews finishing out their top 5. Results and brackets can be found here.



Mason Grapplers Set to Scuffle at the CAA Championships
Byers enters the conference tournament nationally ranked

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – George Mason will travel to Hofstra University this weekend to compete at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships at the David S. Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, N.Y. The two-day event will begin on Friday and conclude the next day. The CAA boasts 18 nationally-ranked individuals and two nationally-ranked teams in Hofstra and Old Dominion.

The Patriots wrapped up their 2007-08 schedule with a 13-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in conference dual meets. Under the tutelage of Head Coach Mark Weader and Assistant Coach James Torres, a young and talented Mason team earned its most dual victories since the 1991-92 season, when the team won its first of five CAA titles.

Colonial Forge Wins AAA State Championships

Congratulations to Colonial Forge for their second straight Virginia AAA state championship. Rounding out the top 5 teams scores were Great Bridge, Fauquier, Cox and Langley. VISAA State Championships

Congratulations to St. Christopher's for winning the private school state championships. St. Chris finished with 281.5 points, 35 more than second place Woodberry Forest. For all the team scores and placewinners click here.

Congratulations to Westfield for winning the Northern Region and Colonial Forge for winning the Northwest. Great Bridge won the Eastern Region and Thomas Dale won the Central Region.
