BILLY MARTIN SR Coach of the Year Award- Coach Martin is considered the Father of Virginia Wrestling. To this day continues to be considered in the conversation of one of the greatest coaches of all time. His Gramby High teams won 22 Virginia State Championships, and had many high school state champions, NCAA Champions and Olympians. All of his son’s won multiple individual state championships and themselves became outstanding coaches. He is one of the few high school coaches that are Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. His Gramby series of wrestling and coaching methods are still used today.
PAT MCCORMICK Official of the Year Award- Pat was a national renowned official at both the High School and Collegiate level. He officiated many High School and NCAA Championships and is widely considered the sports most notable officiating figure. He continues to act as the coordinator of all NCAA Officials. Pat received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
RED ROBERTSON Wrestler Student/Athlete Award- Mr Robertson’s tireless efforts to provide children the opportunity to use athletics as a vehicle for a better life through opportunities and lessons learned by participating in wrestling. It doesn’t just begin and end with what he founded at Grundy High in SE Virginia. His contributions to youth wrestling have impacted the entire state of Virginia. Additionally, the platform of what he built at Grundy has been duplicated in many communities across the nation.
Billy Martin Sr, Pat McCormick and Red Robertson’s contributions to wrestling are of legendary proportions. Their great work reflects well on the State of Virginia and have been recognized across the nation!
