FAIRFAX, Va. – Highlighted by six home contests and a trip to Madison Square Garden, George Mason wrestling head coach Joe Russell has released the 2012-13 wrestling slate. In addition, the Patriots will travel to conference-foe Old Dominion and visit Maryland in preparation for the Colonial Athletic Association Championship in March.
Mason will begin the first part of the season on the road at Gardner-Webb on November 10th before traveling to Boone, N.C. to take on the Mountaineers of Appalachian State on Nov. 11th. Following the Navy Classic on Nov. 17th, the Patriots return home the next day for their first home match of the season against Washington and Lee. Mason will then play host to Navy on December 8th.
The Patriots will head to New York City on Dec. 16th to take part in the inaugural “Grapple at the Garden” tournament at Madison Square Garden. The tournament features 14 universities from around the country as collegiate wrestling competes in the Garden for the first time in its history. “We are honored to be part of the first collegiate wrestling event to take place in Madison Square Garden.” reflected Russell, “When Dylan Wanagiel called with the invitation, I was thrilled. We are thankful to our administration for helping make this a reality”.
Mason will continue on the road for the rest of December with matches at American University and the Brute Invitational on December 20th and 29th, respectively.
In January, Mason will host three tournaments, starting with the Mason Duals on January 4th, followed by the Patriot Classic on Jan. 11th and conclude with the CAA Duals on Jan. 19th. “Having all of the CAA teams on campus will be a plus for George Mason. These home events should be fun for our fans and help prepare our team for the post-season” said Russell.
The Patriots will then travel to VMI for a match on Jan. 20th before taking on Bucknell and Franklin & Marshall on February 2nd in Pennsylvania.
Mason will host their last home match on Feb. 10th against Bloomsburg before hitting the road for its final two regular-season matches. The Patriots visit Old Dominion on Feb. 14 before traveling the short distance to face Maryland on Feb. 21st.
Boston University will host the 2013 CAA Wrestling Championship which will take place on March 9th.
Tickets for all wrestling meets are $6 for adults and $4 for youth (18 & under). Tickets are available for purchase near the entrance to the RAC Gym beginning one hour prior to the start of the meet.
