    2009-2010 VA Top 100 Results

I would like to congratulate all of the finalists and everyone who participated last year in the VA TOP 100 points series. 85 kids participated in the series last year and I have had numerous emails this year from people inquiring about the series.

This point series is geared to encompass all 3 styles of wrestling . Last year we had numerous participants that had done very well in the Folkstyle portion of the series and were at the top of the list but did not participate in the FR/GR portion and slipped down the list. Some of these participants communicated to me that they may try FR/GR this year so that does not happen. .. read more »

    Jeske wins!

Brandon Jeske concluded a dominant Cadet Nationals performance with a 1-0, 1-0 victory over Minnesota’s Dakota Trom in the 130 lb. Cadet Freestyle Finals. Jeske was 10-0 in this tourney and did not yield a single point.  Earlier this spring Brandon won the Fila-Cadet championship.

Brandon confirmed that he will be taking his considerable talents to Cox H.S. next year. Hunter Wright, of Norview H.S., placed 8th at 84 lbs and became a double all-American by placing in both the GR and FS tourneys.   Marcus Beckwith placed 6th to become Meadowbrook H.S.’s first wrestling all-American.

Wow! Pickett’s last stand. Morning of day 6

Junior Duke Pickett exclaimed a victorious yell after stunning the partisan crowd of veteran Fargo wrestling junkies with a breath taking 3 period victory over Dylan Ness (top ranked 145 pounder in the united states, and scholarship athlete going to U of Minn next month).  Within minutes college coaches were asking me “who is Duke Pickett….what are his grades like?” .  These types of performances in Fargo are what get unknown wrestlers suddenly thrust into the national wrestling limelight.  Now standing in Pickett’s path to be an all-american is undefeated Kaleb Friedley of Missourri.  .. read more »

    Day 5 Fargo update

It looked  like it was going to be a repeat of Monday’s 130lb Cadet Greco-roman finals, as Zane Richards seemed destined to once again clash with Virginia super frosh, Brandon Jeske for the 130 lb Cadet Freestyle gold medal. However, Richards was upset by Dakota Trom of Minnesota.   84 pounder Hunter Wright will battle for 7th place and attain All-american status against Carlos Fuentez of Illinois.  Richmond native Marcus Beckwith will battle for 5th place in the 215 pound weight class.  These Cadet Medal matches will occur Friday afternoon. .. read more »

After two grueling rounds of competition in the 2010 Cadet Freestyle Championships, two Virginians have  advanced to the Pool round robins, and subsequently becoming double All-americans.  84 pounder Hunter Wright has pinned his initial two opponents before losing his third round bout.  At this point Hunter has 4 wrestlers left in his pool and is assured of advancing to the medal round on Thursday.  Tomorrow morning he will have two more matches to determine his pool placement.  .. read more »

    Fargo Day 3 Update

The third day of the Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND was highlighted by the completion of the Junior National Greco-Roman Championships.  Christiansburg freshman, Joey Dance went 8-2 at 119 lbs and placed 4th.  Several Virginians fell just short of making the All-American round:  Junior, Blake Roulo went 5 and 2, and Junior Patrick  Budd had a  4 and 2 record.

The Cadets will be in action tomorrow (Wed. July 21st) competing in the Freestyle championships.  Two rounds of action, with over 900 wrestlers will be wrestled.  The Junior version will begin on Thursday.
