Flames Take Opening Three at Hoosier Duals

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The Flames continued their trend at the Hoosier Duals, improving on the previous year’s showing as Liberty won its opening three duals, Saturday afternoon, inside University Gym.
During Liberty’s prior two trips to Bloomington, Ind., the Flames won a single dual in 2007, while taking two matches at last year’s Hoosier Duals. With the trio of victories on the day, Liberty raises its dual meet record to 4-2 on the season. .. read more »
Flames Capture Title at Keystone Classic

All 10 of Liberty’s featured grapplers placed in the event, allowing the Flames to finish the day atop the team standings in their first-ever trip to the Keystone Classic, hosted by Penn inside The Palestra.
Liberty finished the day with 128 points, besting second-place American, who finished with 110.5 team points, followed by third-place finisher Appalachian State, who accumulated 103.5 team points. .. read more »

(1.) Glenvar appears to be the clear leader for its chance at back-to-back state titles. With six returning seniors, it will be extremely difficult for anyone to stop them. Glenvar did lose Andrew Cundiff to early graduation, but with the caliber of wrestlers they possess, that loss does not affect them very much. Glenvar is senior-heavy this season, and Senior, Kahlil Carazo, is one of several, returning leaders for the program. Kahlil looks to better last year’s runner-up finish at 103 at the state tournament. It may be difficult adjusting to 112/119, but Carazo is capable of winning it all this year. .. read more »
Herndon Finishes Fourth at 133 Pounds at the WWSport.com/BU Open

VESTAL, N.Y. (November 15, 2009) – Sophomore Denny Herndon finished in fourth place at 133 pounds at the WWSport.com/BU Open on Sunday at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. Herndon posted a 4-2 record at the tournament.
The Yorktown, Va. native opened the tournament with a win by fall in 2:34 over Quin Leith of Cornell. He followed that up with a 7-1 win over Binghamton’s Genta Murayama and a close 6-5 decision over Drexel’s Frank Cimato before losing to Brian Ortenzio of Penn 3-0 in the championship semifinals. .. read more »
VAWA Pre-Season Top 10 AAA Team Rankings

Cox begins the season as the team to beat in Virginia’s AAA classification. The Falcons are led by a new coach, Matt Small, who replaces Corey Williams. Small moves over from Grassfield where he established the Grizzlies into a state power in less than two years.
Joining Small in the Cox room are many new faces who should fortify the Falcon’s lineup. Returning AAA State Champion and Junior National All-American Caleb Richardson has followed Small from Grassfield. The Falcons have also added additional firepower in National Prep Runner-up Bryan Whitt and returning AAA state placers Michael Chalfant and Conor O’Hara. Eastern Regional place winner Dashon Eure and Eastern District Champ Taylor Bishop also have transferred to the school on Shore Drive. .. read more »
VMI Wrestling Kicks Off Season at Hokie Open

SALEM, Va. – The VMI wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season on Sunday, competing at the Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Salem Civic Center.
A trio of Keydets reached the top eight in their weight classes, as VMI was one of 20 teams competing on the day. Freshman Andrew Bannister went 4-2 at 133 lbs., while sophomore Andrew Szymborski (174 lbs.) and senior Ronnie Ellsworth (197 lbs.) each went 3-2, falling in the consolation semifinals. .. read more »
UVA Wrestling Ranked 17th in WIN Preseason Power Index

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team is ranked 17th in the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) preseason Division I Tournament Power Index for the 2009-10 season. The ranking is the highest at any point in program history. WIN also released its preseason individual rankings, with three Cavaliers listed among the top 20 in their respective weight classes.
UVa is tied for 17th nationally in the preseason team power index with 34-time national champion Oklahoma State as well as Oklahoma. .. read more »
ODU Earns Highest Ranking Ever in Preseason Poll

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University wrestling team achieved its highest ever preseason ranking as the Monarchs enter the 2009 Division I polls No. 19. The poll, released by D1Wrestling.net, also ranks five Monarchs in their individual weight classes.
“Our coaching staff is very excited to start the upcoming season as we have a talented group of veterans coming back, including an all-american and five national qualifiers,” said head coach Steve Martin. “We reached another milestone last year with Ryan Williams becoming the first national finalist under the current coaching staff.
